| Government is generally thought of as an entity which has the power or authority to legislate or make laws and the power to enforce those laws. The democratic government of the United States encompasses many offices and divisions. The United States government is considered the supreme governing agency in this country. Secondly, under our governmental structure each of the 50 states has certain rights and conditions under which they are allowed to create their own laws and self governed by their state government. The next division would be county government or parish. The final division would be the local or city government. In order to provide services at all levels of government, each level has the authority to levy and collect taxes from its people and businesses. These services include water and sewer, garbage collection, police and fire protection, road and street construction and maintenance, schools, parks and more. |

| In the United States, our democratic government was created by our founding fathers in order to keep order and peace in our society for the common good of all people. Ours is said to be a government by the people and for the people. Our government is divided into 3 branches: the Legislative Branch makes the laws; the Executive Branch sees that the laws are carried out; the Judicial Branch enforces the laws and imposes fines, penalties or imprisonment to those offenders of the laws. Although not perfect, our government has stood the test of time for well over 200 years. Without a structured governmental body, it is widely believed there would be little way to prevent chaos and destruction among the people. |
